What Is Myopia?

Myopia, or short-sightedness, is when distant objects appear blurry. It’s becoming increasingly common in children and can worsen as they grow.

What Happens

The eye grows too long, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it, making distant vision blurry.

Why It Progresses

As children grow, their eyes continue to lengthen, often making myopia worse. Screen time and less outdoor activity can accelerate this.

Early Action Matters

The earlier we intervene, the better we can slow progression and protect your child's long-term eye health.

Understanding Myopia Management

Watch how we help protect your child’s vision for the future.

Risk Factors for Myopia

Genetics, environment and lifestyle can all contribute to the risk of myopia development and progression in children.

Screen Time & Close Work

Reading, computer games, smartphones and tablets held close to the eyes can contribute to myopia development, especially from a young age.

Family History

A child with one short-sighted parent has 3x the risk of developing myopia – rising to 6x if both parents are short-sighted.

Age of Onset

The younger a child develops myopia, the more likely it is to progress quickly, often leading to higher levels in adulthood (over -6.00D).

Incorrect Prescription

Under or over-corrected vision, or having no glasses when needed, has been shown to promote onset and accelerate myopia progression.

Limited Outdoor Time

Children who spend less time outdoors have a higher risk of developing myopia. Natural light exposure is protective for eye health.

Ethnicity

Research suggests a link between Asian ethnicity and faster progression of myopia, with higher worldwide prevalence in this group.

Myopia affects over 1 billion people worldwide
and is identified by the World Health Organisation as a potential cause of blindness. This number is rapidly increasing.

Why Myopia Management Matters
Managing myopia early can protect your child from serious eye health issues later in life.

Slows Down Progression

Our specialist treatments aim to slow myopia progression by around 50-60%, reducing your child’s final prescription and helping them achieve better unaided vision.

Protects Long-Term Health

High myopia increases the risk of serious conditions like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts. Early management reduces these risks significantly.

40% Lower Risk Per Dioptre

For each one dioptre less myopia, there’s a 40% reduction in the risk of retinal damage. Early intervention truly makes a difference.

Thinner, Lighter Lenses

By reducing the final prescription, myopia management can lead to thinner, lighter spectacles – more comfortable and better looking for your child.

How You Can Help Protect Your Child’s Sight

Simple changes to everyday habits can help slow myopia progression. These tips are easy, low-cost, and accessible for all families.

Remember the 30:30 OUT Rule

  • 30 cm distance from books and screens
  • 30-minute breaks
  • Get OUTdoors daily

= Balanced Vision for Your Child

Keep Distance

Encourage your child to hold books and digital devices (phones, tablets) more than 30 cm from their eyes.

Take Regular Breaks

Encourage a break from reading or screens every 30 minutes. Look at something in the distance to relax the eyes.

Go Outside

Encourage more outdoor activities and limit screen time to less than 2 hours a day. Natural light helps protect vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our myopia management programme

How does the Myopia Management Care Plan work?

You pay £29.99 per month for a 12-month plan. This includes all clinical check-ups, myopia monitoring, specialist support, and your choice of MiyoSmart spectacle lenses or MiSight contact lenses. You'll need to purchase frames initially, but all lenses throughout the year are covered, including one free replacement if they break.

What happens after the first year?

After the initial 12-month plan, you can choose to continue with the programme. Most children benefit from ongoing myopia management throughout their growing years to maintain the best possible outcomes. We'll review your child's progress and discuss the best way forward.

Are the lenses safe for children?

Yes, absolutely. Both MiyoSmart and MiSight lenses have undergone extensive clinical testing and are approved for use in children. They're specifically designed for young eyes and have excellent safety profiles. Our specialists will ensure proper fitting and provide full training and support.

What age is suitable for myopia management?

Myopia management is most effective when started early. We typically work with children aged 6-18, though the ideal age depends on individual circumstances. The earlier we can begin treatment, the better the long-term outcomes tend to be. Book an assessment and we'll advise if your child is a good candidate.

Can my child play sports with these lenses?

Yes! MiyoSmart spectacle lenses are durable and suitable for most activities. For very active children or those who prefer not to wear glasses during sports, MiSight contact lenses are an excellent option as they stay in place during physical activity and provide freedom of movement.

What if my child's prescription changes?

Prescription changes are covered under your plan. We monitor your child's vision regularly, and if new lenses are needed, they're included in your monthly payment. This ongoing monitoring is actually one of the key benefits of the programme.

Is there a cancellation policy?

The plan is a 12-month commitment to ensure consistent treatment and the best outcomes for your child. If you have concerns or questions about continuing, please speak with our team and we'll do our best to help.

How much does a child's eye test cost?

NHS eye exams for children are free for all children under the age of 16.
