TIMELY DIAGNOSIS SAVES
1 year old Master Othmani Isiyaka Mohamedi visited our OPD with his mother. She complained that his right eye suddenly turned red 1 day ago. He didn’t have any history of injury to the eye and was otherwise a healthy baby
On examination, our pediatric ophthalmologist noted significant amount of blood in the eye with an ulcer on the cornea. She could not examine further and recommended a BScan. Sadly there was a retinal tumor in that eye. We had to refer him to a higher centre for removal of the eye under general anaesthesia.
The mother was well counseled regarding the urgency of treatment.
Retinoblastoma is the most common cancer of the retina. Though rare, it is mostly seen in children below the age of 3. It has a high survival rate if diagnosed and managed in time.
We were lucky to be equipped with a BSCAN ultrasound for quick and accurate diagnosis and urgent referral.
Our appreciation to the dedicated, committed and compassionate team that drive the Centre to increase our services to cater for the most vulnerable and unaffording demography.
But such life saving services are not possible without the generosity of the donors who provide us with state of the art diagnostic tools.
